You may be surprised to discover that skin care and cosmetic products can be dangerous to your health! It turns out that as an industry skin care and beauty products are practically unregulated. The FDA and the manufacturers have agreed to a “self-policing” policy which means that the industry regulates itself.
Good luck! The net result is a frightening mix of toxic chemicals which can directly and indirectly cause cancer, hormone disruptions, neurotoxicity, skin and systemic allergic reactions to name a few.
The ingredients in skin care products have made the news in recent years - typically just a passing mention on network news. The most well know trouble makers belong to the paraben family of chemicals used as preservatives in lotions, conditioners, shampoos, deodorants. They are labeled as methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, benzylparaben, isobutylparaben, and propylparaben. In thirteen different studies, parabens have been found to have a strong estrogenic activty - meaning that they can lead to an net increase in estrogen in the body - especially breast tissue and tumors!! For those women who have a higher risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer this is critical concern.
I wish I could say that this chemical class is the only health concern in skin care and beauty products but they are many, many more. Thankfully, the Environmental Working Group has developed an entire database dedicated to rating and listing the hazards of individual skin care and cosmetic products. I highly recommend that you go to the Environmental Working Group’s Special Cosmetic Safety Site: SkinDeep and search the database to check the safety of your skin care products today!!
