Today we are going to talk about how a certain artificial food coloring can be a major contributor to migraine headaches in both frequency and and severity. This “food” coloring is used in not just food, but also toothpaste, mouthwash, and many other products. The culprit is Tartrazine (FD&C Yellow #5) which you will find in many food and hygiene related products. This food coloring agent is commonly added to “improve” the appearance of a food. It is very important to read labels carefully.

The following is a short list which is suggestive of the thousands of products containing this food dye.

  • Baked Goods
  • Sweet Breads
  • Butter
  • Candies
  • Colored Cereals
  • Cheeses
  • Chips (Potato Corn Taco)
  • Some Frozen Fish
  • Some Canned Fruits
  • Ice Creams
  • Jello (Gelatin)
  • Prepared Meats
  • Lozenges
  • Margarine
  • Pudding
  • Mouthwash
  • Mustard
  • Yogurt
  • Prepared Sauces
  • Toothpaste

Read the labels of all the products that you place in your mouth, on your skin, and on your head. You can absorb agents through your skin as well, so don’t discount this route of transmission.
