Back Pain and How Acupuncture Can Help
Back pain affects over 31 million Americans at any given time. Statistics show that over one-half of all working adults in the U.S. experience back pain symptoms each year. Here in Portland, Oregon it is no different. In our clinic we see countless number of patients with a variety back pain related conditions. Many of those suffering from back pain never receive the treatment they truly need to improve and even resolve their back pain. Thankfully, Acupuncture can be extremely effective for treating back pain.
Sadly, back pain is also one of the most common reasons people miss work and is the second most common reason for seeking medical treatment. Its estimated that Americans spend at least $50 billion years on back pain, which typically consists of pain relieving medication. Rarely do back pain sufferers experience lasting relief
- Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.
- Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic—meaning they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.
- Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain—and that’s just for the more easily identified costs.
- Experts estimate that as many as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.
What Causes Back Pain?
The back is a complicated structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. You can sprain ligaments, strain muscles, rupture disks, and irritate joints, all of which can lead to back pain. While sports injuries or accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements—for example, picking up a pencil from the floor— can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain. Back pain can also directly result from disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss.
Acupuncture and Back Pain Relief
So, how can acupuncture help reduce and even eliminate back pain? Well, according to recent studies, acupuncture is effective in treating back pain. Specifically, research has found that acupuncture increases blood flow to the areas of injury allowing healing nutrients to entire the tissues and draw away chemicals that cause inflammation. This alone can reduce and eliminate muscle spasms, resulting in significant pain relief. Acupuncture also competes with the pain signals within the nerve allowing for yet another means of reducing pain.
